Best chess set: what to look for before you buy
A buying checklist for chess set, with what eBay buyers actually paid. We do not stock this type, so the advice is not steering you to our own product.
Look at the king height, the base weighting and the board size. A king around 3 3/4 inches on a board with 2 inch squares is the standard.
On 2026-11-02, eBay buyers paid a median of $45.00 for chess set (search "chess set"), across 8,100 sold listings. It is a market read, not a quote. Jump to the search shortcuts or read the 6 checks first.

What to look for: 6 checks
These are the points that separate a good chess set from a poor one, in the order they usually matter.
- King heighttournament standard is 3 3/8 to 4 1/2 inches. Smaller sets feel toy-like.
- Board square sizesquares should be about 1.25 to 1.5 times the king base diameter. 2 to 2 1/4 inches is common.
- Weighted piecesfelted, weighted bases stay upright and slide quietly. Lightweight plastic pieces tip.
- Materialwood is warm and classic, plastic is durable and cheap, glass and stone are decorative.
- Board typeroll-up vinyl is portable, folding wood stores pieces, solid wood is permanent.
- Piece designStaunton style is the recognised pattern for clarity in play.
The mistake to avoid
- Decorative themed sets look great but can hide piece identity. If you play seriously, stick to Staunton shapes.

$45.008,100 sold listings · read 2026-11-02
On 2026-11-02, eBay buyers paid a median of $45.00 for chess set (search "chess set"), across 8,100 sold listings. That is real money changing hands on eBay, which makes it a useful anchor when you compare asking prices elsewhere.
How to read it: the count is the sold-result total eBay shows for a search of sold and completed listings, and the median is from the first page of prices (about 60 listings, new and used mixed). It is not an Amazon price, it ignores shipping and condition, and it does not say what a given product is worth. A different spec will sit well above or below it.

A king of 3 3/4 inches on a board with 2 1/4 inch squares is a common tournament standard.

We do earn a commission on qualifying Amazon purchases made through the search links, and the link labels say so. Nothing here is independent testing.
