What to look for: 7 checks
These are the points that separate a good outdoor rugs from a poor one, in the order they usually matter.

- Edge finishbound or serged edges stop fraying. Raw-cut edges unravel after a few washes.
- Pattern and coloura mid-tone, patterned rug hides footprints and leaf stains better than a plain, light one.
- Cleaninga rug you can hose down and hang to dry saves a lot of effort. Check it is rated for that.
The mistake to avoid
- Some rugs sold as outdoor are really indoor-rated and fade or smell after a wet spell. Look for UV-resistant, mildew-resistant on the product details.
